What does Family History Have to do with my Health?

Today we’ll be talking about your genes and how much your family history actually plays a part in your overall health. I think we all know there are some things that we have ZERO control over like our eye color, how tall we are, if we have flat feet, and certain personality traits. There happens to be SO much that you do in fact have control over and I’m here to let you in on the secrets!

Genetics

Even though you may have a long family history of Diabetes and Heart disease, this does not mean that you automatically will develop these ailments as well. You’re just going to have to work a little harder than the average person at reprogramming your genes— Yes, this is possible which is an amazing thing for you and me!

My family history is riddled with cancer, loads of it. High cholesterol, thyroid disease, and heart disease are also packed in there tightly. Since I know what I need to do now to put myself in the best position to overcome these things, I feel absolutely empowered! It’s mind blowing to be honest.

One of the most surprising things that I’ve learned while taking my course work for nutritional health coaching is that less than 5% of cancers are actually inherited from your family. That’s huge news for those of us who have cancer within your direct family line, especially on both sides like myself.

Gene Expression

According to Mark Sisson of Mark’s Daily Apple you can minimize your risk for cancer, Diabetes, and other chronic illnesses by following these rules:

  • “Do not smoke
  • Drink alcohol in moderation
  • Eat copious produce (this should be the “bulk” of your diet)
  • Do not eat processed, fried, junk, or refined carbohydrate/grain foods
  • Absolutely avoid sodas and sweetened drinks
  • Avoid corn syrup, cured and/or heavily processed meats, and corn oil
  • Do not eat trans fat or canola oil
  • Eat “clean”, lean protein  (organic, grass-fed, free-range, etc.)
  • Eat “smart” fats (wild fatty fish, fish oil pills, avocados, nuts, olive oil, purslane)
  • Mothers, breast-feed your baby if possible
  • Exercise
  • Get daily sunlight exposure!
  • Get plenty of antioxidants from your diet and supplements
  • Avoid hormone therapy unless medically necessary
  • Manage stress to regulate hormones appropriately”

Those rules are the actual basis for the Primal program (Paleo with a twist) that I’ll be teaching to my clients in June 2019. To get on the waitlist of those interested in working together be sure to click here. You’ll be the first ones notified once I start accepting new clients.

Your daily enviroment, from the foods you eat to the exercise you get, are constantly influencing your genes to activate or not. So you may have a gene that predisposes you to get Diabetes, but without you expressing that type of lifestyle you are more likely to beat those odds.

On the other hand, if you participtae in behavior like eating a high carbohydrate diet and aren’t very active that will inform the gene to activate and put you on a fast track to Diabetes.

Luckily, for those that currently have Diabetes or another chronic illnesses, there is hope! It takes approximately 21 days to reprogram your genes for optimal health. So with the assistance of a coach you can be well on your way to reversing your Diabetes or other ailment.

Great news right?! I don’t know about you, but what couldn’t be better than having an opportunity to take back your health or point your health in the right direction so you can be there even longer for the ones you love.
